As an abstract artist and educator, Kyla sees creativity everywhere. Each creative act is an authentic engagement with living. As Métis, she embraces the land as her teacher and is learning to ask questions and to listen mindfully, recognizing that awareness and contentment are made possible by embracing the beauty and wonder around us.
Through her contemporary abstract art, Kyla brings together her endless wondering about creation, her desire to honour reciprocity and connection, and her yearning to map how a mind, body, and soul stores and processes stories— traumatic as well as uplifting.
Kyla’s art has evolved over the last 15 years to include mediums such as oil, ink, and spray paint. Each medium offers its own unique expression, and playing with texture and effect is both fun and functional. Each modality is a new kind of language that works together to tell the story of her art. Spending weeks or months with a canvas is like visiting with a close friend. Each corner of the canvas is a container, and the goal is to bring unity to the chaos of creative expression.
In this way, Kyla’s art is art that bares a soul: it maps lifetimes—hers and others—and it even maps out other worlds, depending how deeply one looks.
